CNN —Former New York Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from the House and is facing federal charges, announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing his bid for Congress in New York’s 1st District. The future holds countless possibilities and I am ready willing and able to step up to the plate and go fight for my country at anytime,” Santos said. The announcement comes roughly a month after Santos said he was leaving the Republican Party and would make his congressional comeback bid as an independent. The former congressman became the sixth lawmaker ever to be expelled from the House in December 2023. It’s only goodbye for now, I’ll be back,” Santos said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jack Lobel is a college sophomore who will be voting in his first presidential election this fall, casting a ballot for Joe Biden. “If age were really a concern we would not see this much energy around these groups," said Lobel, an urban studies major in New York. “President Biden comes before midterms and exams and papers,” Lobel said, only half-joking. The groups' affinity for the president is little surprise given that young people tend to be more left-leaning than many other voting blocs. Still, it may soften the blow of many voters' concerns about Biden's age.

Former President Donald Trump and his allies on the Republican National Committee want to convince Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to speak at the GOP convention in July, people familiar with the matter told CNBC. It is not clear if Trump or his allies have raised the idea with Musk. Musk previously voiced support for the Republican presidential candidacy of Florida Gov. "He said the other day, 'Oh, I've never voted for a Republican,' " Trump said at that rally. Thiel also said in that interview that Trump's presidential administration, which spanned January 2017 to January 2021, was "crazier" and "more dangerous than I thought."

Tesla CEO Elon Musk met with former President Donald Trump on Sunday in Palm Beach, Florida, along with unnamed wealthy Republican donors, the New York Times reported, citing three people briefed on the meeting. Private jets belonging to Trump and Musk were spotted landing within less than an hour of one another at a Palm Beach airport on March 2. Musk, who owns X and runs defense contractor SpaceX in addition to Tesla, didn't endorse Trump in his 2016 or 2020 campaigns. In 2022, Trump called Musk a "bull---- artist," claiming that the Tesla CEO said he voted for Trump in private conversations between them. In November 2022, after Musk bought Twitter with the assistance of funding from Saudi Arabia, President Biden was asked whether Musk was a potential threat to national security.

But Democrats say that is incongruous with the House GOP legislation defining life as beginning at conception. But Steel is also a co-sponsor of the Life at Conception Act — which Democrats have been quick to point out. Steel’s office has not yet returned a request for comment on how she squares those two positions, nor have other House Republicans who expressed support for IVF while being co-sponsors of the House bill. And on Monday, the House Democrats’ campaign arm convened a press call with Reproductive Freedom for All to further hammer House Republicans over the issue. Still, Bacon argued the purpose of the bill is not to ban IVF, despite Democrats claiming otherwise.

Stefanik has often explained it herself: She saw Trump’s popularity in her upstate New York district and got on board. That first impeachment proceeding made her a “Republican star,” as Trump himself said at the time. When there was a nationwide baby formula shortage in 2022, Stefanik blamed the “White House, House Dems, & usual pedo grifters” on social media. One upset donor told CNN in 2023 that he gave to Santos “because of Elise Stefanik’s endorsement.” Stefanik frequently denied any previous knowledge of his Santos’ history. “The American people stand with President Trump,” Stefanik wrote, “against the unethical, unconstitutional, and unprecedented weaponization of the judicial system.”CNN’s Alayna Treene contributed to this story.

But Iowa caucusgoers and New Hampshire primary voters also exposed noticeable chinks in Trump’s electoral armor and worrying general election headwinds that he and his campaign will face in the coming months. Yes, Trump handily won a head-to-head matchup in a New Hampshire primary contest that wasn’t limited to just Republicans. “Twenty percent of GOP voters will not vote for him,” the Republican member told CNN. Visibly miffed by Haley’s conviction to continue on after New Hampshire, Trump spent the evening lashing out at her online and trashing her appearance in his victory speech. Of the 30% of New Hampshire GOP primary voters who named immigration as their top concern, nearly 8 in 10 voted for Trump, according to CNN’s exit poll.

Ms. Ernst quickly used the experience to take a swing at Democrats, writing on social media: “Can’t help but choke on the woke policies Dems are forcing down our throats. CNN —The judge overseeing the Fulton County election racketeering case declined Tuesday to send one of Donald Trump’s co-defendants to jail over recent social media posts and other comments he made targeting witnesses. He does not get an ‘oh, I’m sorry,’ after I’ve already intimidated the witnesses in this case,” Willis said. The felonies Floyd faces in the case are largely tied to his role in an intimidation campaign targeting two Atlanta election workers in late 2020. The leader of Black Voices for Trump, Floyd was separately charged in May with simple assault of a federal officer who was delivering a subpoena to him to testify before a grand jury in Washington, DC. Upending the race dynamics might prove more daunting for Mr. Biden than for his predecessors. But there is not much the Biden campaign can tell voters about Mr. Trump that they don’t already know. (Or for that matter, not much Mr. Biden can tell voters about Mr. Biden that they don’t already know.) When Mr. Bush’s campaign began planning for his re-election, they confronted polling numbers that — while not as unnerving for the president as some that have come out in recent weeks about Mr. Biden — were cause for concern. The House is set to vote on a stopgap measure to avert a government shutdown on Tuesday. But days ahead of the deadline, GOP infighting has reared its head, as a group of conservatives threatened to oppose the measure, placing the legislation’s fate once again in Democrats’ hands. Democrats are widely expected to back the bill, though leadership has yet to endorse it publicly, as they look to avoid a shutdown. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took a similar route in September when conservatives threatened to block the continuing resolution’s path forward. Johnson called the CR’s two-step process an “important innovation,” while noting that he’s “done with short-term CRs” and “the House Republican conference is committed to never being in this situation again.”“It took decades to get into this mess, right.

He also didn’t engage in GOP attacks against special counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into former President Donald Trump. WASHINGTON — Democrats on Capitol Hill are forming a new working group on artificial intelligence and prioritizing how to prevent deepfakes from wreaking havoc on personal lives, national security and the upcoming 2024 elections. Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Wash., will chair the new AI working group in the New Democrat Coalition, a 97-member bloc of House members that typically avoid the spotlight but wield significant influence over policy within the caucus. "There's real concern about the potential for AI generated disinformation, real concern about misuse of advanced AI models," Kilmer told CNBC. Another concerning aspect for many lawmakers is what AI generated images could mean in the world of campaign ads. Prosecutors say Sam Bankman-Fried donated $100 million to politicians using FTX funds. Messages from Ryan Salame quoted in a court filing say SBF wanted "to weed out anti-crypto" politicians. Although prosecutors have put that number as high as $100 million because they say Bankman-Fried funneled millions more through FTX executives. Prosecutors' evidence includes messages from Ryan Salame, the former co-CEO of FTX's Bahamian affiliate company, who prosecutors say is "a co-conspirator in the defendant's illegal campaign finance scheme." Ohioians issued a resounding rejection of a GOP-led gambit to stymie abortion rights. It also seems pretty clear that more than a year removed from Roe's reversal, Americans remain animated about the future of abortion rights. Just under 642,000 Ohioans voted early, smashing turnout in recent elections, The Columbus Dispatch reported. In comparison, 263,000 Ohioans voted early last May in races that featured contested US Senate and gubernatorial races.
